Day 25 Walgett to Coonamble 115 km

Every dog for miles around decided to bark around 5:30 am. Not sure why but it got me packing up early. It was about 6 degrees when I stuck my head out of the tent.

I put on some water to boil for a cup of tea while I packed the tent. Muesli and tea for breakfast again! Happy to get on the road early as I have 115 km to Coonamble with nothing to stop for on the way.

drought effected field
Straight out of camp the scenery is as before - drought stricken fields as far as the eye can see and this continued for 60 km. Fortunately the wind was vaguely assisting me at times and not there at all at other times. It was a lovely sunny morning but the air stayed cool all day meaning it was pleasant riding.

Fly central - lunchspot
Coal Seam Gas mining is very contentious here
With very little traffic I felt comfortable putting the earplugs in and listening to music which helped churn out the kilometres. At 11:30 am I pulled over for an early lunch break after 80 km. I set up my chair and started to raid the food bag. The flies were so bad I had to resort to my fly net. I ended up spooning rice and tuna into my mouth under the net.

Despite the flies I snoozed in the chair for 30 minutes. With only 35 km more to go I thought I would get there early however the last 15 km were a slog.  I didn't really look at the town as I went through to the caravan park on the other side.  It is greener than any of the towns l have passed through lately.

Water Tower, Coonamble
At the caravan park I got a powered site for $15 and was able to do my laundry for the first time since Roma. I have been doing some hand washing in the interim but this was an opportunity to throw everything into the machine. I forgot to throw in the tea towel and the sleeping sheet.

Once the laundry was complete I walked up to the shopping centre. Everything apart from the pubs was closed.

  1. Hi Joe, We met a an overseas chap yesterday who has been cycling the world in between contracts. He is now 77 and is fit as a fiddle. We made him a cup of coffee which was downed in seconds flat. He had ridden 74 kms for the morning and we had only driven the same distance. We stop constantly looking at and photographing wildflowers. Having such a good time I don't want to go home. We are already late with our itinerary. Safe travels. Gary & Tricia
