Day 31 Forbes to West Wyalong 106 km

It rained from midnight to 5:00 am. Fortunately I was snug and dry in my tent and when it came time to pack up the tent was mostly dry. I was lucky because 30 minutes later it was raining again. By then I was drinking coffee in the bakery after having a quick spin around town. Hopefully the rain is falling where it is needed.

Forbes has a small sculpture park opposite the post office. There is no explaining some things!

After coffee I headed out of town down the Newell Highway. I had been thinking about alternate routes but the weather forecast suggests miserable weather the next 2 days so I just want to bust out some distance rather than play tourist. Leaving Forbes it was drizzling and very gloomy. All the cars and trucks had their headlights on.

Happily there was a broad shoulder for me to ride in and the traffic wasn't bad. Although there were trucks all day they didn't worry me. The rain stopped and the wind was mainly a crosswind and not slowing me down. By 10:00 am I had covered 45 km and was feeling hungry so stopped to eat the salad roll I bought at the bakery this morning.

Another 90 minutes and another 30 km it was time for lunch in the Rest Stop at Marsden. I was hoping there would be a shop there so I could buy a pot of tea however there is nothing. I boiled water for a cup-a-soup and a cup of tea. I'm running out if cooking gas so every use is carefully considered. I needed to warm up as most of the morning it has been less than 10 degrees.

I was amused as this Rest Stop has toilets which is less common in NSW than in Queensland - every grey nomad was stopping for a pee break and there was queue of caravans and camper vans lined up.

After lunch it was back on the road for another 30 km until I arrived at Wyalong. Another 5 km to West Wyalong. Last year when we drove through here we must have taken a bypass road because I was surprised to find really nice town with an interesting main street full of pubs and coffee shops. Unfortunately I couldn't find a shop with camping gas canisters. I really need to find one because I need hot water if I am camping.

As it was still windy and miserable I opted for a pub room rather than camping tonight. There were lots of choices but the Royal Hotel won me - $55 for a room.
